Church reacts to David Platt leaving Brook Hills

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Church members and officials are reacting to the news that senior pastor David Platt will be leaving the Church at Brook Hills.

The word came from senior pastor David Platt via a video emailed to church members.

"As of about a month from now I will no longer be pastor of the Church at Brook Hills," Platt said.

Platt will take the job as the president of the International Mission Board, which will be sending people to spread the gospel across the world.

Leslie Brewer has been a member of the church for about a year and says she will deeply miss Platt.

"I was heartbroken. I was at work when I got the email I was really upset. But in the greater scheme of things I know it is for good," Brewer said.

She says Platt will be difficult to replace.

"He really showed me what reverence was and what respect for what the gospel was in a new way. To be so young, to have that obedience to God and faithfulness to the church was amazing to see," Brewer said.

Platt was emotional talking to his church members in the video.

"[I want to] tell you guys I love you. I love the church at Brook Hills," Platt said.

Brewer has complete confidence in the church elders to find a replacement. Executive pastor Dennis Blythe says there is no timetable, but they are putting together plan.

Meanwhile a huge crowd is expected Sunday as Platt gets to address the congregation about his decision.

The leadership at Brook Hills released the following statement on Thursday:

As The Church at Brook Hills, everything we do is ultimately for the sake of God's glory among all nations. While we are saddened that David Platt will no longer be our Senior Pasto, we wholeheartedly support his decision to serve as President of the International Mission Board (IMB). We know of no one with greater passion and zeal for seeing Christ preached where He has not yet been named.

For many years, the IMB has been one of our primary partners in sending members of our faith family to make disciples around the world, and we look forward to this relationship continuing under David's leadership there. We are deeply grateful for the season God has allowed David to shepherd The Church at Brook Hills. We now gladly pray for the Platt family as they transition to a new assignment and begin the work of mobilizing thousands of churches to accomplish the Great Commission.

By God's grace, Brook Hills will continue to be a vibrant disciple-making church. We trust God's sovereign plans for our faith family and are confident He will continue to lead us in the months and years ahead.
