MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The death of a shooting instructor in Arizona, by a 9-year-old has WSFA 12 News looking into shooting range laws in our state.

The trained instructor was helping the child fire an Uzi when recoil from the automatic weapon forced the gun up. The instructor was shot in the head.

WSFA wanted to know how local shooting ranges that are open to the public operate.

Children as young as 12 are allowed to enter the Montgomery Indoor Shooting Complex as long as they are with a parent or guardian.

Montgomery Indoor Shooting Complex Co-owner Lilly Gibbs says its not unusual because many see this activity as a family outing. But she says that safety is a priority.

"Several of the workers, myself included, are NRA certified firearm instructors, and range safety officers," said Gibbs. "We do monitor the range as people are out and there is typically a range safety officer out there."

Owners say kids age 16 and younger, are required to shoot with a gun no larger than a .22 caliber.

Automatic guns are not an option here. Bringing your own gun may be an option, depending on what type of gun it is. You can also rent one.

"Customers bringing your own firearm, we ask that it already be unloaded, in a case and we will check to make sure the firearm is unloaded so that there's not a risk of accidental discharge," Gibbs said.

At anytime, if workers feel someone is not experienced enough or their body frame may be too small to handle a large gun, they will deny them services.

A gun permit is not required to utilize the shooting range, but customers must present some type of government issued ID.

Owners say thankfully there have been no accidents since the facility opened eleven months ago.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's office shooting range follows different rules since it caters to law enforcement.

They do offer a citizens gun familiarization class one Saturday out of the month. You are required to have a gun permit to attend.
