Tips to rent a home in Auburn this fall

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

For those looking to earn an extra buck this fall, renting or leasing your home for game day weekends on the plains may seem like a logical option.

However, before you place one of the hundreds of ads online, Auburn city officials want to make sure you are taking the right steps.

Penny Smith, City of Auburn Finance Director, explains, "As we started to see more and more, we needed to see if that happened in certain zones, if this is permissible in a neighborhood setting, and how does that effect city taxes, hotels and rentals that are set up as permanent rentals across town."

Renting or leasing a single family home for less than six continuous months may result in violation, or an unrelated occupancy violation in accordance with the City of Auburn's Zoning Ordinance.

The planning department can help find out what you are allowed to do based on your zoning designation.

"If you're doing it on more of a consistent basis, it may be a fact you changed the use of that property from a single to something we would call a tourist home use which is not permitted in a neighborhood conservation district," says Forrest Cotten, Auburn Planning Director.

Also, if you plan to rent or lease your home for less than six months it requires the collection of state, county and city lodging taxes.

"If there isn't a complaint we're not going to know about it, but we have gotten complaints, we have gotten phone calls," Cotten explains.

For more information on lodging taxes, please contact the City's Revenue Office at 334-501-7239.

For more information on zoning, please contact the City's Planning Department at 334-501-3040.
