3-year-old girl dies after being hit by golf cart at Aiken hospital

AIKEN, SC (WFXG) -

A 3-year-old girl died after she was hit by a golf cart Monday in the parking lot of Aiken Regional Medical Centers, Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said.

The family was leaving the hospital and heading toward the parking lot around 1:35 p.m. when the girl was struck by a golf cart driven by a hospital security guard, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.

The girl, who was from Graniteville, received medical treatment in the Aiken Regional Medical Centers emergency department and was later transported to Children's Hospital of Georgia.

She was pronounced dead Tuesday morning at Children's Hospital of Georgia, Carlton said.

Aiken Regional Medical Centers released this statement:

"All of us here at the hospital are devastated by the accident that occurred yesterday afternoon. Our thoughts and prayers are with this little girl and her family. The investigation is in the hands of Aiken Public Safety and they will be providing you with more details as they become available."

Aiken Public Safety officials said the department's Accident Reconstruction Team will conduct a detailed investigation, which may include speed determination, scale diagrams or collection of data for reconstruction.

Lt. Ben Harm works on the Accident Reconstruction Team, and said this is an extremely detailed process when conducting an investigation, and the process could take months.

"We draw scale diagrams, we attempt to calculate the speed of the vehicle using some math calculations, we take a drag factor from the roadway, and if we have the vehicle present we might actually do speed testing with that vehicle," Harm said. "So there's a lot involved with any sort of serious collision."

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning in Newberry.

If you know about Columbia County's cooling centers, you are one of the few. The County is trying to do a better job of spreading the word that these cooling centers are out there.  Don't let the gloomy clouds deceive you. The occasional cloud cover we saw on Friday is expected to disappear this weekend. This while the heat index will go above 100.  "Stayed hydrated, Check the heat index, don't go out unless you absolutely have or unless you need too," says ...
