HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

More than one-thousand people joined together Saturday to raise money and awareness for ALS.

The Alabama chapter of the ALS Association held it's 10th annual walk to defeat ALS at Hudson Alpha for Biotechnology in Huntsville Alabama.

Their goal was 206-thousand dollars.

They surpassed that goal even before the walk started.

All the money will be used to help local chapters sustain care services and support research.

Alabama Chapter of ALS Association Chairman, Stewart Oberman said, "I want to thank the community for being so supportive almost everyone I know has done the ice bucket challenge and challenge other poeple to do it.It's raising awareness, it's raising money for ALS research and our chapter. Just want to thank the community for being so supportive and so generous."

WAFF's Liz Hurley did her part to help to help raise money for ALS by taking the ice bucket challenge.
