AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - After 51 years, Paine College is bringing back their football program to join the rest of their athletic teams.
"We have a lot of talent just like most places, but they're trying to push it to the next level," Paine College wide receiver, Danny Wolgemuth said.
"My expectations is that this team will come out and play hard. We won't quit and we'll put a product out there that's discipline, and we'll be well coached and our kids are going to get out there," Head Coach Gregory Ruffin said.
The lions will play division 2 football.
"Division 2 as you see now the BCS is no more, they're going to play off structure," Ruffin said. "Division 2 always had the play out structure. So I mean you look at the guys that have gone out on their own for division 2 and played in the NFL."
"They're tough on us, but they know we don't want nothing less than perfection we want to go somewhere strong," Wolgemuth said.
The teams expectations are high, and they have only one thing on their mind - working hard to get their first win to lay the groundwork for the future of this program.
"We have so much youth and the team is so young since we're starting out that everyone has the time to progress," Paine College rover Vincent Thomas said.
The players want to take care of business on the field, to give fans something to cheer about.
"Sometimes you get excitement and some people are just kind of laid back because they want to figure what you are going to do this year. So right now everyone is kind of content, people are excited and ready to jump out their seat, but I think we're going to have a huge crowd at our first home game," Thomas said.
Saturday, August 23, the Lions will be hosting fan day. For more information about the team and to purchase your season tickets, visit the Paine College Athletics website.
