AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - He's fought for his district - trying to revitalize parts of South Augusta. But now Joe Jackson is stepping out of the spotlight to take care of his family. Earlier this year, his wife, Mary, died after battling cancer.
"With Joe, just losing his best friend in the first quarter of this year, and he's having to become the mother and the father in that family, it's been very trying on him," said Commissioner Wayne Guilfoyle. "Plus, running his own personal business."
Guilfoyle said Jackson has been an inspiration, considering him a true friend
"Joe is part of the reason why I'm in the position I'm in on the commission," said Guilfoyle.
"When my tenure is up, Joe and me, we'll always stay friends," said Guilfoyle.
Guilfoyle said despite the hardships of this past year, Jackson remained committed to serving his constituents.
"Joe does care about Augusta," said Guilfoyle. "It has shown in his votes. It has shown on his personal agendas."
