Family and friends remember William 'Bill' Davitte

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - Richard Albert said his lifelong friend Bill Davitte loved to be outside and always took care of the grass at Marvin United Methodist Church.

"The lord is taking care of us," Richard Albert said at Bill's memorial service Sunday. "He's taking care of him and the one who did this too."

Bill was killed Thursday while he and his wife Jennifer were turning on sprinklers at the church. 21-year-old Daniel Robinson approached their car, demanded Jennifer get out and began beating her. When Bill tried to help, Robinson shot him three times in the face.

Friends and family said it's senseless.

"His daddy taught me in high school ," Albert said. "That's how far back his family and I go."

Albert said Bill loved tractors and kept the lawn at the church green.

"When he took over the grass, it was nothing but dirt, rocks and ant hills. You can see how beautiful it is today," Albert said.

Jennifer was taken to Georgia Regents Medical Center for a head injury. She was released.

Robinson fled to Jacksonville, Florida, where he was arrested. He is now behind bars there for reckless driving, trespassing, driving without a license, theft of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest and trying to flee.

Columbia County Deputies said he will have make bond in Florida before he can be transported to Georgia, where he will face a murder charge.

Authorities don't know why he was in Augusta yet, but they do know Robinson got away in the Davitte's car after the incident and was headed to Jacksonville.
