SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A man who was on federal probation for selling drugs was allegedly caught selling heroin in the city's North End neighborhood on Thursday.

Police arrested 26-year-old Daniel Ruiz about 12:30 p.m. after undercover narcotics officers had been watching him deal heroin near his residence at 62 Calhoun St., according to Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney.

Detectives approached Ruiz as he was making heroin deals and he fled on foot. The convicted drug dealer tossed his drug bags in a backyard as he ran from police, but detectives were able to catch him and recover the 50 bags of heroin he threw, Delaney said.

Detectives executed a federal probation warrant and recovered drug paraphernalia, nearly $100 cash, and more heroin bags with the logo "777" stamped on them.

Police charged Ruiz with possession of a class A substance with intent to distribute, resisting arrest, and violation of a drug-free school zone because of his close proximity to Lincoln School. He was also charged with a U.S. District Court warrant.

Ruiz was issued a $75,000 bond based on his past criminal history.

Ruiz was scheduled to be arraigned in Hampden County District Court and Federal Court.
