BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Cars of the future may not fly but could talk to each other. A grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation is funding that research at LSU. Engineering professor Sheriff Ishak is taking the wheel on the project. The idea, he said, cars in the future will have the ability to collect and exchange traffic information with each other on the road.

“So while you're driving upstream you will be getting traffic conditions downstream through the information happening from one vehicle to another,” said Ishak.

The technology is similar to Wi-Fi at home. Ishak explained this will reduce delays, cut down car pollution, and more importantly improve road safety. He said cars will be able to give drivers caution signals to help avoid a crash.

“That way you give warning to the driver,” said Ishak. “The driver will have time to respond by slowing down so somehow the system is monitoring the headway between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you.”

Researchers said car manufacturers already are anxious to get this new technology into their cars and on the road.
