HOPKINS COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - After a serious accident at an East Texas coal mine, five employees of the Luminant-owned Thermo Mine are still in the hospital

Hopkins County Fire Chief Kevin Yates said that workers at the mine were fighting a silo fire mid-afternoon Wednesday just outside of Sulphur Springs. Several hundred tons of hot ash and burning embers fell onto six of the workers. Five of the workers had to dig their way out of the ash, Yates said.

A statement sent to KLTV by Luminant says the employees were in the vicinity of an out-of-service lignite storage silo.

Those five suffered second-degree burns to their arms and legs, Yates said, and were transported to Hopkins County Memorial Hospital. One of them was then airlifted to Parkland Hospital in Dallas, while the other four were taken to Parkland by ambulance. All five are at Parkland, where their condition is listed as stable. The sixth employee was treated and released from Hopkins County Memorial Hospital in Sulphur Springs.

Luminant officials say there has been no active mining at Thermo Mine in months. They do plan to resume mining there this fall, so crews were preparing the site to restart active mining.

MSHA and OSHA are on the scene and have closed the mine while they investigate.
