COKER, AL (WBRC) -

Walking into a bathroom and have running water is a part of everyday life for so many of us but what if you didn't have it? Could you imagine life without it?

That's what Coker resident Sheila Davis says she's been dealing with for four years.

Once a week, she travels over 30 miles to fill up dozens of milk jugs to cook and clean with. She gets by using two gallons of water a day for a bath.

"I heat one then put one in for cold because I can't use anymore because water is so precious. Every drop," Davis said.

The Coker Water Authority says it doesn't have the money to run new water lines to her house off of Highway 82. Davis has been told to pay for those water lines which could cost $20,000.

"I've begged for water. I don't think anybody should have to beg for water," Davis said.

Davis says she's getting by on a fixed income and is a recent cancer survivor.

"It was a lot easier for me to have the cancer fixed than it is to turn on a faucet and get a glass of water," Davis said.

Longtime board member Millard Evans has been trying to help, and says other board members just don't care about the situation. Evans says the water authority has the money.

"This is a public water system and it's our obligation to help anybody out that doesn't have water," Evans said.

"I'd love to have a water bill because I know if I get a water bill, I've got running water in my house ... and that would be the most blessing," Davis added.

FOX6 News tried reaching other water board members Monday night but did not have any luck. There is a water board meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Davis says she plans to be there to ask the board for running water again.
