Suspect leads deputies on chase in east Augusta

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - A suspect is now in custody after he led Richmond County Deputies on a chase into South Carolina Thursday night.

"A deputy went to do a traffic stop on a vehicle, "Lt. Ramone Lamkin said. "They recognized the subject and then the subject fled the vehicle on Bungalow road."

Lt. Lamkin said the subject kept going down Peach Orchard, hit Gordon Highway and then headed into South Carolina on I-520.

"Speeds got up to 90 miles an hour," Lt. Lamkin said.

When the suspect tried to get off on an exit ramp, he crashed and got away into a wooded area.

Deputies aren't releasing details on who he is, but said earlier he was not considered a danger to the public.

Witnesses emailed the WFXG newsroom and said the suspect had almost crashed into their own vehicle around 10:05 p.m.
