Nurses talk breastfeeding at Doctors Hospital

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - It's World Breastfeeding Week, and nurses at Doctors Hospital are offering some tips on what you need to know.

"We should always be promoting and supporting breast feeding," said Sally Wood, Lactation Specialist.

Wood is standing by at Doctors Hospital in case you have any questions.

"A large of grandmothers these days did not breastfeed," explained Wood. "So they don't know how to help their daughters, or they're giving them advice that isn't right."

Wood said there are a lot of added benefits to choosing breast milk over formula - she even has a big list on her office door.

"There are many more ingredients that are obviously put in there by mom, such as immunities," said Wood. "Babies are born without an immune system - essentially, they've been living in a sterile environment.

Experts said Georgia is far behind on the breast feeding front - so officials at Doctors Hospital are hoping to get a baby-friendly designation in part by following the ten steps to successful breastfeeding.

"It basically assures that we have the policies and procedures that would allow moms to start out with a very good experience which is going to set the tone for the rest of their breast feeding experience," said Wood.
