Abandoned Kansas dog settles into new digs with Florida heiress

TAMPA, FL (KCTV) -

A dog who walked 30 miles back to a Kansas family who didn't want her back is settling into her new palatial digs in Florida.

Lady is now getting lots of kisses and rides on a golf cart as she explores her new home with other rescued dogs at the mansion of a Florida heiress.

"She's going get to be the quintessential dog," Wrigley Gum heiress Helen Rich Rosburg said. "Lady deserves to have the best possible life for bringing attention to all the others like her."

Lady was facing spending the rest of her days spent in a cage at a Kansas shelter. And then someone associated with the shelter posted about her plight on Facebook.

Two families who had adopted her from a Kansas shelter refused to take her back despite her undertaking extraordinary efforts to get back to one family's home.

As word spread on social media, heartbroken dog fans swamped the Chautauqua County Animal Shelter telephone line as they sought to adopt the older dog.

One of those learning about Lady was Rosburg. She quickly issued orders to her assistant, Chet Ragsdale.

"Chet, go get that dog right now!" she said emphatically. "She needs a home now, not tomorrow, not next week."

The dog tale goes back to 2012. Lady, who has also been called Ma Kettle, saw her owner die in 2012. No one wanted the dog so she wound up at the shelter in Sedan, KS.

A Sedan family adopted Lady, but she was rough with the family's puppy and didn't get along well with little dogs.

So the family returned the dog to the shelter. Earlier this summer, a woman in Independence, KS, adopted Lady.

But Lady's desire to return to her previous owner was overwhelming. She escaped from her Independence home and the aged arthritic dog walked 30 miles to Sedan.

The family with the little dogs wouldn't take her back. And the Independence woman also decided she didn't want Lady back.

So back to the shelter she went with an uncertain future.

"She had already been recycled three times for heaven's sake!" Rosburg told CNN.

So Ragsdale traveled in a private jet to Kansas to pick up Lady last week. Ragsdale said Lady jumped up into the seat to look out over the lights of her new home as they approached Tampa's airport.

"That was probably the most touching part," Ragsdale said.

Now Lady is making friends with other stray dogs adopted by Rosburg who have the roam of her 15,000-square-foot mansion. She also has 130 acres to explore.

"I live on a farm. There's all kinds of things to investigate, smell, see and do," Rosburg said.

And already Rosburg is calling herself "Mommy" to Lady who clearly knows what a dog's life she has now and quickly doles out kisses to her new best friend. She's even snuggling with Rosburg in her bed.

"She's not going to let me go," Rosburg said.

And unlike Lady's recent experiences, Rosburg is not letting the lab go either.
