Man accused of torching ex-girlfriend charged with murder

Michael Kennedy. Michael Kennedy.
JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

The man accused of dousing his ex-girlfriend with gasoline and setting her on fire has been formally charged with murder in the case.

Michael Kennedy, 48, was originally arrested on charges of domestic violence and attempted murder.

His charges were upgraded to murder after his former girlfriend, 49-year-old Deborah Diane Prater, died from the extensive burns to her body on Tuesday.

Kennedy's bond is set at $250,000, according to Sgt. Jack Self with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

Officials say Kennedy and Prater had been in a dating relationship for three years, but Prater ended it about a month ago.

Kennedy came back to Prater's home early Sunday morning and the former couple got into an argument, which ended with Kennedy setting Prater on fire and fleeing from the scene.

He was arrested in Midfield on Monday afternoon and is being held in the Jefferson County Jail.

Officials say Kennedy is a paranoid schizophrenic.
