GDOT to stop road construction near some stores for sales tax holiday

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

The Georgia Department of Transportation is trying to make it easier for shoppers to get to the stores this weekend during the sales tax holiday.

Construction-related lane closures within five miles of a shopping mall or major shopping center will be suspended on Friday and Saturday during tax-free weekend. The suspension of closures starts 8 a.m. Friday and end at 10 p.m. Saturday.

"The sales tax holiday is an opportunity for Georgians to save a little money during these challenging economic times," said Georgia DOT Commissioner Keith Golden. "The Department is glad to offer some relief from lane closures as families prepare for school."

During the sales tax holiday, shoppers will not have to pay tax on certain clothing, computers and other back to school items.

South Carolina's tax-free weekend is also scheduled for this weekend. It will take place Friday through Sunday.
