Local fire department gets oxygen mask for pets

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A new device could help save the lives of pets in the event of fire - an oxygen mask made just for pets.

First priority for firefighters is saving all lives. Sometimes, that means giving oxygen to a victim, but most departments only have O2 masks for the human face.

In a YouTube video, viewers can see the owner struggling to keep an oxygen mask around a dog's face.

"We've had crews that have used regular O2 masks that we have for humans. Those masks give some oxygen, but don't give the delivery of oxygen that these masks can give," said James Garrett with the Kansas City, MO, Fire Department.

Now, thanks to Invisible Fence, for $100 per kit fire departments can have a mask on hand just for animals. It's designed to fit snuggly around the faces of cats and dogs and it comes in three different sizes.

Kansas City is one of the fire departments that received a kit.

"At the end of the day, a pet is like a family member they are saving," said Tyler Schonfelder with Invisible Fence Company.

The Invisible Fence Brand has donated 10,000 pet masks to fire departments nationwide, but it's all done through their donation program.

If you want to ensure your neighborhood fire station gets one, contact Invisible Fence for fundraiser options.
