Economic boom could come to Augusta in August

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - The Augusta Convention and Visitors Bureau said August look fantastic for the city.

"I think we're at $1.7 to $1.8 million for August expected visitor spending," President and CEO Barry White said.

Travel, sporting events and business conventions are scheduled starting August 1 through August 30.

For example, the American Taekwondo Association Martial Arts Southeast Regional Taekwondo Competition starts August 1 and is expected to bring in $60,648.00.

Barry said during tournaments, visitors will spend money that will stay here in the local economy.

"They're going to spend money in hotels, at restaurants and gas stations," White said.

The Georgia United States Tennis Association will host a 2014 Mixed Doubles Tennis Championships August 8, which could rake it $566,048.00.
