GRANITEVILLE, SC (WFXG) -

A fire destroyed a house on Vaucluse Road in Graniteville early Monday, according to the Graniteville Fire Department.

We spoke to the homeowner today and she is still trying to wrap her head around everything that happened. She was back at the house today looking at the damage and was in tears.

She declined to go on camera today, but we talked to neighbor Julia Kee who says it was a good Samaritan who saved the homeowner and her 2-year-old daughter from the fire this morning.

"I think it was a miracle that the man that was going by saw it and stopped and got the two people out," Kee said.

The call came in to the Graniteville Fire Department around 1:45 a.m., and thanks to that one man's quick thinking, a mother and her daughter were able to escape the flames.

"That was the main thing to know that they were okay," Kee said. "That they're all right thanks to some good Samaritan."

Graniteville fire officials said the man was driving by the house when he saw the fire and ran over to the side of the house and started beating on the windows until the mother woke up and grabbed her daughter.

Kee said hearing that someone stopped to wake up her neighbors gives her a sense of comfort.

"It makes me feel safer. I'm a widow alone, and I like to think that if somebody knew something was wrong they'd help me out," she said.

After seeing the damage to the house, Kee says she'll do whatever she can to help the family and hopes the community does the same.

"Our little community, you know, I'm sure will do something for them," Kee said.

The homeowner is still trying to take in everything that's happened, and she told us she would like to thank the man who woke her up, and that without him she doesn't know if she and her daughter would have made it out of the house.

The homeowner and her daughter are staying with family right now. She told us she had actually been packing to move and all of her and her daughter's clothes and belongings have been destroyed.

In fact, it was her daughter's birthday in August, and all her presents were destroyed in the fire.

If anyone has any clothes or toys they would like to donate to the family, you can drop them off at the WFXG Fox 54 station located at 3933 Washington Road.

The house is a total loss. The Aiken County Sheriff's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
