AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - A Richmond County father is behind bars after deputies said he left his 19-month-old son alone in a car for several minutes Saturday.
Russell Givens, 45, was booked at the Richmond County jail Thursday and charged with deprivation of a minor, Sgt. Michael McDaniel said.
Firefighters, EMS and deputies responded to Woodcrest Apartments around 5:20 p.m. Saturday in response to a call about a child alone in a hot car.
A man and a woman told deputies that they saw the child alone in the back seat of the car with only one window slightly rolled down, according to an incident report. The man was able to put his arm inside the rolled-down window, unlock the car and get the child out.
EMS arrived and said the child was warm and moist, but he was otherwise in good health, according to the report. Givens came back to his car shortly after the fire department arrived.
Givens told deputies he was at the apartment complex to say hello to his brother who lives there. He said he was only in his brother's apartment for three minutes and that the air conditioning in the car had been running just before he parked the car.
The child was released to Givens at the scene, but on Tuesday the sheriff's office issued a warrant for his arrest.
Although the child was in good health and had no lasting effects from being left in the car, the sheriff's office issued a warrant because Givens admitted to deputies that he did leave the child unattended for several minutes, according to the report.
Deputies said the National Weather Service recorded the temperature at the time of the incident as 92 degrees in Augusta with a heat index of 94 degrees.
