335th Signal Command (Theater) gets new commander

FORT GORDON, GA (WFXG) -

The loud celebration at Fort Gordon on Saturday was the change of command ceremony. For the military, it's tradition. It shows a visible change in leadership.

"Its an opportunity for the soldiers and their families and civilians to see firsthand the transition in leadership and this allows an opportunity for us to celebrate," said General Christopher Kemp.

Major General Lawrence Brock, former commander for the 335th Signal Command (Theater) passed a flag representing the leadership responsibilities to General Kemp.

"Surely I'm humbled and honored to have the opportunity," Kemp said. "Soldiers represent than one percent of the U.S. population and to have the opportunity to come in here and serve them is a very unique opportunity."

He's now the leader of about eight thousand soldiers who work to provide secure lines of communications for armed forces members around the globe.

"We provide all the services with access to communications so they can pick the phone up and call worldwide."

Kemp said as important as his new position is as a leader of 335th Signal Command, his main priority is serving country to the best of his ability.

"I see myself as a servant for this unit. The army gives you this tag of leader of an organization. It's an important role. It's a critical role but at the end of all this my only real purpose is to serve the soldiers and their families and the civilians."

With that purpose as his motivation, Kemp said as the new leader, he'll give everything to the 335th Signal Command.
