IN State Board of Education considers curbing powers of superintendent

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (WFIE) -

Democratic Indiana Schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz says she'll have her lawyers review a measure approved by the State Board of Education that could curb her powers.

Ritz said Wednesday that she didn't believe the board has the authority to limit her ability to set the board's agenda and other items.

The board voted 7-3 Wednesday afternoon to appoint a special committee that would consider new limits on her power.

Ritz chairs the board, but has frequently found herself at odds with its members appointed by Republican governors.

Fighting resumed recently between Ritz and Gov. Mike Pence's education staff and appointees over the state's efforts to maintain its federal No Child Left Behind waiver.

Ritz and Pence's staff accused each other of jeopardizing the waiver.
