George Walton home open on July 4 for tours

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - As we celebrate the birth of our nation on Friday, some Augustans and visitors got a chance to explore the former home of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The home of George Walton was open for tours.

Walton is one of the three signers of the Declaration from Georgia and he's also noted as one of the youngest, although his exact birth date is unknown.

The house features period furniture of the late 18th and early 19th centuries and Walton family memorabilia.

"I think there are only 29 signers who have homes standing, said Holly Croft, the house manager for the Walton Home. "It's not all of them, not even most of them anymore. People look at places like Virginia and South Carolina and they have multiple signers but this is really it for us and I think many people don't realize it's here. It really is a treasure. It's a remarkable thing."

The George Walton home is also Augusta's oldest documented house.
