Arthur holding at Category 1, gaining speed in approach to NC coast

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Hurricane Arthur remains a strong Category 1 hurricane as it moves toward the North Carolina coast, according to the latest update from the National Weather Service.

At 5 p.m., the National Weather Service said the storm's maximum sustained winds were at 90 mph. A Category 2 hurricane has maximum sustained winds of between 96 and 110 mph.

The latest location data plotted the storm at 33.4 degrees North and 77.9 degrees West and moving north-northeast at 13 mph.

Tropical storm warnings remain in effect for Georgetown and Horry Counties.

In the Lowcountry, conditions were improving as the storm passed by, but the effects could still be felt in the form of wind gusts and higher waves, according to Live 5 Chief Meteorologist Bill Walsh.

A wind advisory for the area has been canceled, but gusts of up to 30 mph are still possible along the immediate coast.

High surf and an increased risk of rip currents are also still possible, along with breakers between four to six feet.

Rain will continue to taper off north of Charleston, with scattered storms possible into the evening.
