Truck cited after hitting boy on bike in Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

The pickup truck that hit a 6-year-old boy on Hilton Head Island Monday has been cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

Highway patrol said the driver was trying to make a right hand turn on Pope Avenue and hit the little boy riding his bike, an unfortunately situation that those who work in the area say happens entirely too often.

"A lot traffic. More of what I heard. A lot of ambulances and fire trucks," Tina Bass said.

Bass works at the corner of Pope Avenue and Office Park Road and the exact intersection where the 6-year-old boy was seriously hurt after getting hit by a Dodge pickup truck Monday afternoon.

But several locals, like Bass, said it's a constant occurrence at that intersection.

"Most of the people in the office - we don't go that way," she said. We go out New Orleans Road."

Bass said it's a combination of the traffic and a lack of awareness, and drivers and pedestrians alike need to use more caution to keep the roads safe.

"It's like a double edged sword . The traffic is heavy. People are weaving in and out and then people just aren't paying attention," she said.

Troopers said the young boy was from Bluffton, but since he's only six, his condition or name aren't being released.
