AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - The Richmond County Sheriff's Office was awarded more than $3.4 million in new equipment, Sheriff Richard Roundtree announced Tuesday.
"One of the most challenging issues the sheriff's office faces is acquisition of advanced equipment while staying within the guidelines of the current budget restraint," said Roundtree.
The equipment, which includes a patrol boat and 12 humvees, was given to the sheriff's office as surplus items from the military.
One of the featured pieces, a $733,000 mine-resistant vehicle, will be vital in responding to scenes, according to officials.
"If we have any kind of a violent situation, for instance, like an active shooter, we can actually utilize this vehicle as a support truck to move injured patients from that area, where EMS and fire can take over," said Clint Steerman, a sheriff's office medic.
The sheriff's office didn't pay anything for the equipment, but the total estimated value of the items is $3,480,836.99.
