Group aims for 7,500 signatures for Sunday alcohol sales issue

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A petition group will be out for the Greenville Drive game on Tuesday in an effort to get signatures to add the Sunday alcohol sales referendum to the November ballot.

Starting at 3 p.m., people wanting to sign the petition to have the referendum added to the ballot can stop by Mac's Speed Shop, which is across the street from Fluor Field in downtown Greenville.

Petitions are up at restaurants across the city of Greenville and the county, including Applebee's on White Horse Road and Woodruff Road, On the Boarder on Pelham Road, Chilis on Woodruff Road, Logans on Pelham, Hot Spot on Blue Ridge, Rendevoux, Big J Tobacco on Wade Hampton Boulevard, Bacon Brothers Public House and Ruby Tuesday's on Pelham Road, at Cherrydale and Rick Erwins.

People signing the petition must be registered Greenville County voters and 7,500 signatures are needed by July 7.

If enough signatures are collected, it means the question of Sunday alcohol sales will be added to the ballot for November. It does not mean sales will be legalized, but it will give voters the chance to speak up on the issue.

Greenville County Council's Committee of the Whole put the brakes on the referendum that would have allowed voters to decide in November. Read more about their decision here.

In Spartanburg County, the county council passed a first reading of an ordinance that would allow the referendum be added to the November ballot. Click here to read more.
