WASHINGTON (CBS5) -

U.S. Senators John McCain, R-AZ, and Jeff Flake, R-AZ, say they've introduced legislation that would increase penalties for human smuggling across the Mexican border.

The senators said in a statement that the legislation is a companion bill to H. R. 4961, introduced by Congressman McCaul of Texas in the House of Representatives, and was originally part of a comprehensive immigration reform bill that passed the Senate in 2013.

"Today, nearly all who illegally cross the Mexican border into United States do so with the assistance of a human smuggler - or coyote - and with the permission of the Mexican drug cartels," Sens. McCain and Flake said in a statement Friday. "To help combat these criminal entities, we have introduced legislation to increases penalties for human smugglers, including a prison sentence of up to 20 years for those that attempt to smuggle unaccompanied minors."
