5 malnourished dogs, and 2 dead dogs were found in Beech Island home

BEECH ISLAND, SC (WFXG) - Two dogs are dead and five other malnourished dogs were taken to the Aiken County Animal Shelter. Animal Control said Cottie Ledford was charged with ill treatment of animals after the pets were found in and around her feces infested home.

A tip about an abandoned animal lead Aiken County animal control officers to Koger Loop in Beech Island... Joseph Venable, a neighbor, says you there's been a stench, coming from that mobile home.

That smell convinced officers to investigate further.. They found the decomposing body of a dog, still chained, under the house, and 6 other malnourished dogs in the home. Bobby Arthurs, chief enforcement officer for Aiken Animal Control, says one died on the way to the animal shelter.

"It's very heartbreaking and very aggravating. It gets you very upset when you have to deal with situations like this," Arthurs said.

"I've seen it before, and it's a bedroom, and they never went outside," Venable said. "They lived in the bedroom with nothing but  newspapers with crap all over the floor."

Venable also told us that he noticed that the dogs weren't being treated well, and even offered to care for them.

"I told her I wanted to take those animals off their hands and take care of them myself because they weren't treating them right and she wouldn't let me do it," Venable said.

Cottie Ledford is being held at the Aiken County Detention Center. Venable hopes she learns her lesson.

The five remaining dogs are being treated at the Aiken County Animal Shelter and they are expected to fully recover. Officers said they aren't available for adoption because they're part of an investigation.
