AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - A 20-year-old woman is facing charges after Richmond County deputies said she left her 2-week-old baby unattended in a hot SUV Thursday morning.
Alicia Manigault is accused of leaving her baby, Christopher Howard, in the rear cargo area of her SUV in the parking lot of Virginia College, Sgt. Monica Belser said. She told deputies she was taking final exams inside the college.
Deputies arrived at the school on Wylds Road at 8:42 a.m. and saw the baby in a carrier covered with a white blanket, Sgt. Monica Belser said. The engine was turned off, and the windows were down one to two inches each.
A deputy crawled through the sunroof, unlocked the doors and took Christopher out of the SUV, Belser said. Deputies estimate the baby was in the hot car alone for 30 minutes to an hour.
EMS transported him to Georgia Regents Medical Center for treatment of heat-related issues.
After Christopher was stabilized and hydrated, he was released and turned over to his maternal grandmother, Belser said.
Manigault was arrested and charged with second-degree cruelty to children.
The Department of Children and Family Services responded to Georgia Regents Medical Center and launched their own investigation.
