Brazen suspects open fire in parking lot with officer nearby

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Police are searching for suspects after a double shooting at downtown Kansas City gas station.

It happened about 10:30 p.m. Saturday near East Sixth Street and Grand Boulevard in the parking lot of Grand Slam Liquor.

Plenty of people witnessed the shooting, including police who were sitting in the parking lot just feet away.

Family members say the man who died was 25-year-old Christopher Mondaine.

"There was so many cop cars around here you couldn't get through for hours," said Megan Geiger, who came home to crime scene tape and flashing lights.

When she found out that two men had been shot just down the street from her apartment, she started to worry.

"We had a couple of people next door that actually told us what happened. At that point in time, they had not caught the shooter. So he very well could have been in this area. So we definitely waited to come down a little bit," Geiger said.

The shooting started following a fight in the parking lot of the gas station near the River Market.

Police say two men were gunned down in their car, and a nearby officer responded immediately, shooting back at the suspects as they drove away.

"We don't know if he hit or injured anybody. Those suspects fled the scene," said Capt. Tye Grant of the Kansas City Police Department.

One of the victims tried to drive away, but another officer caught up to him. The other victim died in the hospital overnight.

"Anytime you're faced with a life-threatening situation, that is going to be a very frightening situation and what is best for the officer will be determined after this evening," Grant said.

The shootout shook up Geiger and her neighbors, even after three years of living in the neighborhood and witnessing similar shootings.

It was not something they get used to, but it is not something that surprises them either, especially living in the downtown area, Geiger said.

At this time, police have not located the suspects or their vehicle.
