Fans flood local bars and pubs for World Cup

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

No matter who you're rooting for there's no doubt that the World Cup reaches across country lines in the most exciting way.

"It has been the World Series, the Super Bowl and the Daytona 500 rolled into one," says Robert Walker, the owner of My Father’s Moustache in Mt. Pleasant.

"It's one of the more intense times that you see so many countries come together,” says soccer fan Edward Curtis. “Even though you do have the Olympics, the World Cup almost seems to be a step above with just the intensity and the passion by all the fans."

Tito Opondo traveled from Kenya for business. He says he wasn't expecting to catch the games in the States but is pleasantly surprised by the sport’s popularity.

“I thought soccer wasn't so big in the States, but apparently it is very big, and I've met a lot of people over here who are rooting for different teams, and it's growing and becoming very big in the States. So, it's very impressive."

Over at My Father's Moustache the crowds were as impressive. Walker says he's been planning for months for these 32 days.

"We opened up five months ago, and I have spent the last five months with this being the only thing on my radar."

"This is our time, every four years or every weekend during the English Premier League,” says Arleigh Hertzler, the general manager of Park Circle’s Madra Rua. “It's something that we do, we focus on and, we try to make these guys as comfortable they can."
