City of Charleston providing fun for youth at 'Friday Night Lights'

Posted: Updated:
CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Kids wrapped up an entire Friday night of hanging out with police and firemen from the City of Charleston.

The city put on the first "Friday Night Lights" at Harmon Park in downtown Charleston. The program is a chance for kids and teenagers to spend time with one another as well as police officers and firefighters.

The rules of football dominated the field tonight, but city officials say the rules in life is what "Friday Night Lights" is all about, and they want kids to know when they need help, the police officers are on their team.

"That's what we're trying to promote, that's what we're trying to get across.. you know, that we're not the bad guys, we're the good guys," said Sgt. Damien Seabrook of the Charleston Police Department." We just have that part of the side of our jobs that we have to do, but it's all about building up a relationship with the community and making it better for everybody. Teaching these kids now and this generation that the police is not bad."

This was the first of nine more "Friday Night Lights" that will be held at several locations in Charleston. The event is free and no registration is required.
