Commanding general speaks on alleged Parris Island assault

PARRIS ISLAND (WTOC) -

Parris Island's first female commanding general had some partaking words for the now former depot sergeant who was seen on camera in a scuffle with a former Parris Island drill instructor.

Former Depot Sergeant Major Paul Archie served as Brigadier General Loretta Reynolds' senior enlisted adviser up until that incident.

Archie had only held this position at Parris Island since February but he's dedicated the last 25 years of his life to the Marine Corps.

He voluntarily stepped down from that position earlier this week after his arrest for third degree assault and battery.

This could impact not only Parris Island, but the Marine Corps in general.

But General Reynolds reiterated that all marines are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the core values of honor, courage and commitment.

"I'll just tell you right now, Sergeant Major Paul Archie is a phenomenal Marine. He is a great Marine. I'm proud of the job that he did when he was here and I would like all these young men and women, these drill instructors to look at his service as 'I want to be like that guy.' But it's about a very, very high standard and that's what we're looking for for all of our Marines," she said.

Parris Island will hold a Change of Command ceremony next Friday for General Reynolds who will pass on the position to Brigadier General Terry Williams.
