DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Storm damaged roads in DeKalb County could have repairs begin soon. The roads had been a wreck since being damaged by the severe weather on April 28.

They had been waiting for approval from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. They got that okay just a couple days ago and supplies were put on order.

In DeKalb County, portions of County Roads 28, 34, 482, between Geraldine and Crossville, and County Road 651 in Mentone have been closed since storms swept through the area on April 28. Heavy floodwaters damaged the roads and one resident estimated more than six inches of rain fell.

Some roads are partially collapsed, others there is a large gap between pavement. The road closures have caused some travel problems for area residents, not only the ones passing through, but especially for those who live next to the closed area.

"Because we have to drive at least two miles around this way to get to Crossville, or to go to Geraldine we have to drive about three miles extra to get to Geraldine," said Charles Morgan who lives on County Road 482. "It's caused us a lot of problems."

County Commissioner Shane Wooten said the good news is the roads will be built better in the hopes that it won't happen again.

Preliminary work could begin as early as one week on the nearly $300,000 worth of projects. County road officials estimated it could take up to two months construction time once they begin.
