Fire crews contain gas leak in USC building

Students are now being allowed back in the Swearingen Engineering Center Friday afternoon after a reported chemical leak forced an evacuation.

The hydrogen-chloride compressed gas leak was reported to the university's Division of Law Enforcement and Safety, Columbia Fire Department, Columbia HazMat, USC Facilities and other university personnel.

The leak was minimized by the protection system located within the lab

Fire crews monitored the air quality inside the building to ensure that it was within proper levels

Over 26 CFD personnel, USC PD, USC Life Safety and RCEMS worked to place the scene under control around 4 p.m.

No injuries were reported.
