Mitchell Paul Simon, 17, appears in a Butler County Court for sentencing on Tuesday.
LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -
The Liberty Township teen who pleaded guilty to executing a plot to kill his parents was sentenced on Tuesday.
As his mother and father sat in the courtroom, 17-year-old Mitchell Paul Simon received a nine year sentence in prison for tying his parent's bedroom door shut and starting a fire in their home.
"I do want to say that I love them dearly and I'm sorry for getting myself into this spot, for doing what I did," Mitchell told Butler County Common Pleas Judge Craig Hedric before the sentence was handed down.
Judge Hedric reiterated how troubling the case was, saying he empathized with Simon's parents but was left without sufficient mitigation to rule out prison.
"This court's responsibility and duty is much different than your parents," the judge told Simon.
Officials said Simon kept a journal with drawings and detailed plans to harm his parents.
His father had to jump from the second story window to escape, breaking both of his legs. His mother was able to escape with the help of Liberty Township fire crews. The Lakota West student fled the home in his father's car.
Judge Hedric sentenced him to nine years for each of the three counts to be served concurrently.
