Protest in front of clinic applying for license to perform abortions

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Pro-life supporters protested a clinic where abortions potentially could be performed in Huntsville.

They gathered in front of the Alabama Women's Wellness Center on Sparkman Drive. The facility had applied for a license to be able to perform abortions. The area's only existing clinic that can perform abortions may be forced to shut down.

That's because of a new state law that increased building code regulations for abortion clinics. Pro-life supporters said the proposed clinic, across from Ed White Middle School, would encourage school children to consider abortion, and would target minorities.

"Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers believe that their outreach to women of color has been ineffective, and so they are launching a multi-year campaign to get more into communities of color," said Catherine Davis with the National Black Pro-Life Coalition

"It's a little disgusting," said Kathy Zentner of the Alabama Reproductive Rights Advocates. "They say it's because they want to protect the children from knowing about this, but if they weren't out here, no child would know about it because they're the ones raising attention to the issue. They are violating city ordinances. They are on private property."

Alabama Women's Wellness Center's license application has to be approved by the State Department of Public Health.
