TUCSON, AZ (AP) -

Tucson police have announced a new database tracking encounters in which officers enforce SB1070, the state's so-called "show me your papers" law.

The policy change is modeled after an agreement between the city of South Tucson and the ACLU of Arizona that aims to curb racial profiling. The organization had filed a notice of claim, or a precursor to a lawsuit, against South Tucson over its enforcement of the sweeping immigration law SB1070.

Tucson Police Chief Roberto Villasenor said on Wednesday that the department will now keep a separate database tracking police encounters in which immigration officials get involved.

The ACLU came to the agreement with South Tucson in May. The ACLU has also filed a notice of claim against Tucson but the city has not responded, a spokesman said.
