WASHINGTON, DC (CNN) – The White House has apologized for failing to alert Congress about the prisoner exchange that secured the release of U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-CA, said the deputy national security advisor called her Monday night, apologizing for not providing Congress with 30 days notice, as is required by law.

Feinstein is chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Bergdahl was swapped for five prisoners from Guantanamo Bay on Saturday.

Feinstein said top Democrats and Republicans on the National Security Committee had discussed the possibility of a prisoner swap in 2011, and there were strong views against the trade.

White House officials have said they moved quickly out of concern about Bergdahl's health.
