High 5 4 Kids: Ella Grace Lockamy

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

High5 4 Kids Nominee Ella Grace Lockamy is helping Stevens Creek Elementary go green.

The 11-year-old is helping spearhead a recycling movement at the school.

"When she started helping out, I thought it was just going to be a day or two," her mother, Pamela Lockamy, said.

But Pamela Lockamy said it quickly turned into a passion for Ella Grace.

"She sometimes spends an hour after school doing this when she could be outside playing with her friends," Pamela Lockamy said.

It all started with Spanish teacher Casey Aguilar, who took the school from simple paper and plastic recycling to partnering with a company called Terracycle.

"We ship items to them that are really hard to recycle, like toothpaste, lunchables and even shoes," Aguilar said.

But it all needs to be sorted. Just ask Ella Grace.

"They have to be separated so we can stack them and you have to rip off the cardboard," Ella Grace said.

Her next project, though, will be moving on to the sixth grade at a new school that doesn't have a recycling program yet.

"If a teacher is interested in doing it, I will show them how," Ella Grace said.
