PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Maricopa County sheriff's deputies are investigating a drowning at Lake Pleasant.

The 38-year-old man tried to swim across the cove, which is about 250 feet, sheriff's investigators said.

The victim is identified as Nelson Gomez Rivas.

Halfway there, Rivas started to struggle and went underwater for several minutes.

People jumped in to save him and started CPR, but he died at the hospital.

Deputies said they believe impairment was not a factor.
