Police investigate illegally purchased metals and gems

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Seven pawn shops and gold-buying businesses in Augusta were cited for illegally purchasing precious metals and gems, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office. 

The businesses were either buying metals or gems without obtaining a permit from the sheriff's office as required by a county ordnance or buying the metals or gems without obtaining identification or without documenting the sale, according to the sheriff's office. 

Investigators visited 30 pawn shops and gold buyers as part of the operation. The following businesses were cited:

GA Pawn and Jewelry

Location: 1659 Gordon Highway

Violation: Failure to obtain ANY identification or documenting the purchase of precious metals and gems

Action: Magistrate Court citation issued

EZQ Pawn

Location: 2160 Martin Luther King Blvd Augusta, GA

Violation: Failure to obtain ANY identification or documenting the purchase of precious metals and gems

Action: Magistrate Court citation issued

Miller Pawn

Location: 2852 Deans Bridge Road 

Violation: Failure to obtain any identification or documenting the purchase of precious metals and gems

Action: Magistrate Court citation issued

Hephzibah Pawn

Location: 2356 Hwy 88 in Hephzibah, GA 

Violation: Failure to obtain any identification or documenting the purchase of precious metals and gems

Action: Magistrate Court citation issued

Golden Jewelers

Location: 3205 Deans Bridge Road (Walmart shopping center)

Violation #1: Purchasing precious metal without first obtaining a regulatory precious metals buyer permit

Violation #2: Failure to obtain any identification or documenting the purchase of precious metals and gems

Action: Magistrate Court citation issued

Simons Auto Sales, Printing and Gold Buying

Location: 2225 Wheeless Road Augusta, GA

Violation #1: Purchasing Precious Metal without first obtaining a regulatory precious metals buyer permit

Violation #2: Failure to obtain any identification or documenting the purchase of precious metals and gems

Action: Magistrate Court citation issued

King's Jewelers

Location: 3450 Wrightsboro Road (Augusta Mall, 2nd floor)

Violation #1: Purchasing precious metal without first obtaining a regulatory precious metals buyer permit

Violation #2: Failure to obtain any identification or documenting the purchase of precious metals and gems

Action: Magistrate Court citation issued

 

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office asks that any anyone in the business of purchasing or dealing in precious metals (gold, silver, platinum), precious gems and antique coins should contact Investigator Kendall Brown at 706-821-1440 or Deputy Cheryl Shields at 706-821-1447 to obtain a free regulatory permit and to learn about the record-keeping requirements.

Failure to comply with this law can and will result in citations and fines, confiscation of illegal purchased material and the possibility of business license revocation.
