MILLEN, GA (WFXG) - A hostage situation in Millen Thursday afternoon put area schools on lockdown.
Millen police said 57-year-old Rick Pittman held his wife hostage at gunpoint for almost four hours.
Police got the call around 2 p.m. about a hostage situation on Bay Street. The home was right across the street from Jenkins County High School, so it was immediately locked down, along with other schools in the area.
For the next four hours, Millen police, Jenkins County Sheriff's deputies, Georgia State Patrol troopers and the Department of Natural Resources stood outside Pittman's home and tried to negotiate his wife's release.
Jenkins County Sheriff Robert Oglesby said he had to go inside the home while Pittman was armed to get him to turn himself in.
"It took a while to get him to talk to us," Oglesby said. "We had negotiators come in from GSP, we had the SWAT team come in. We wanted to make sure this thing was done right and nobody got hurt. I went into the home to speak with him, and he turned himself over."
The sheriff said Pittman turned himself in around 6 p.m. No one was injured during the incident.
Pittman was being held Thursday at the Jenkins County Sheriff's Office awaiting a mental evaluation.
