AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - A Richmond County school board candidate was arrested Saturday after deputies said he hit his daughter with a belt.
James Swanagan, 53, is charged with simple battery, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.
An officer was conducting a routine area check when he saw Swanagan holding his 29-year-old daughter Kimberly Swanagan by her hair and hitting her with a belt, according to an incident report.
When the officer stopped, James Swanagan let go of his daughter, according to the report. Kimberly Swanagan told the officer she went to her father's home to pick up her son and then got into an argument with her father.
She also told the officer that her father pushed her to the ground after she refused to talk to him, according to the report. She said that's when her father got a belt and started hitting her.
James Swanagan told the officer that he started hitting his daughter because she called his fiancee a derogatory name, according to the report.
He was arrested and booked at the Richmond County Jail.
