VESTAVIA HILLS, AL (WBRC) -

Vestavia Hills High School Athletic Association President Louis Noto says someone is trying make money by taking money from the school's athletes.

"These companies contact our local businesses to try and solicit from them (claiming) the proceeds from the sales are going to go to the school," said Noto. "We've never seen one dime of it."

Noto says the scammers usually promise businesses advertising, in exchange for their donations.

"It could be anywhere from $4,000 to $5,000 at a time that is plucked out. And that's a lot of money that we lose from our association that goes towards helping the students," said Noto.

It's not just Vestavia Hills that has seen this problem. About this time last year, Jefferson County school officials put out a warning to parents about a similar scheme.

Noto says he doesn't know who the scammers are, but he wants everyone to be aware. If businesses have any questions, he says they should contact the school system immediately.

"What they need to do is get a name and a number so that they can call back, and so that they can at least contact us. We can follow up for them," Noto said.
