Incumbents Arnold, Burgess win GOP primaries in Rutherford

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

Incumbents Robert Arnold and Ernest Burgess both picked up big victories in the Rutherford County Republican Primary held on Tuesday.

In a contentious race, Burgess, seeking his third term, outpolled Jimmy Evans 58% to 42%.

Burgess will now face Heather Ann Brown and Teresa St. Clair in August's general election.

Arnold received 60 percent of the votes against challenger Bob Asbury in the Sheriff's race.

The incumbent, seeking his second term, will face Democratic nominee Bill Kennedy, a former deputy, and independent candidates Dale Armour and Jim Roy Tramel II.

Jennings Jones held a big lead over Charles Ward in the 16th District District Attorney race, which covers Rutherford and Cannon counties. Jones had garnered 62 percent of the votes with 73 percent of precincts reporting.

The winner does not have opposition in the August primary.

Incumbent Public Defender Gerald Melton held a slim 51%-49% lead over Andy Brunette with 73 percent of precints reporting. The winner, which will serve Rutherford and Cannon counties, has no opposition in August.
