Fort Gordon soldier farewell ceremony held Sunday

FORT GORDON, GA (WFXG) -

Family members and friends filled the gym at Fort Gordon today to wish their loved ones off as these soldiers deploy for nine months.

Samantha Shamion's fiance is one of the soldiers leaving for Kuwait and Afghanistan, and even though this is his second deployment, she says this time around it's harder.

"I've gotten used to having him around every single day and now it's just going to be one of those things where I'm going to wake up in the morning and he's not going to be next to me," she says.

The two grew up together in Idaho and only have each other here in Augusta.

"With both of us being from Idaho we don't have family down here, it's just the two of us so it's just one of those things being alone," she says.

But she has the support of her friends while her fiance is away to help her through the time apart.

"It's the having the support system that's what got me through it last time and that's what's going to get me through it again," Shamion says.

And as the buses were loaded, the final hugs were given and goodbyes were said, it was an emotional goodbye for all the families and friends. Soldiers and family members are just waiting for those they care about to come home safe, and had some encouraging words of sendoff.

"We're behind them. We support them everything they do and we're here back home supporting them and their families and we appreciate everything not just them but everybody over there is doing right now," says Lt. . Col. . Michael Martel.

"I love him, a lot," Shamion says as her eyes fill with tears.

There is some good news for Shamion and her fiance: they will be married next May after he returns home from his tour.
