AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Scammers are now targeting Columbia County residents with what deputies are calling the Green Dot Card scam.

One anonymous woman told us she got a phone call Wednesday around 1:30 p.m. The voice on the phone told her he was Lt. Trent Davis and there was a warrant out for her husband's arrest.

"I couldn't get in touch with my husband," the anonymous woman said, "so I called the number back. This time, Captain Kemp answered and said I needed to immediately go get two Green Dot Cards."

The caller told her to put $452 on one card for a warrant waiver and $369 on a second card for a processing fee. The caller also told her she would get the money back.

But Columbia County Sheriff's Captain Steve Morris said there isn't a Lt. Trent Davis in the department or a Captain Kemp. He said the entire thing is a scam.

"The scammers are calling people telling them they've missed jury duty, but they can get out of it if they pay a certain amount of money," Captain Morris said.

Captain Morris said three cases have happened in the past few days. He says only one person has handed over money. That person was scammed out of more than $700.
